2008 Mental Health

To launch our unique Integrative Mental Health focus, the Ted and Roberta Mann Foundation approved three important grants during 2008.  The first was a planning grant of $200,000 to Allina Hospitals to identify best practices in the field, survey provider interest and develop a system-wide Allina model.  On May 11th 2009, Allina will host a forum to share the results of the grant and engage providers in next steps.  Secondly, the foundation approved a grant of $20,000 to the Consortium for Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine to provide support for the North American Research Conference on Complementary & Integrative Medicine to be held May 12-15, 2009 in Minneapolis.  This second bi-annual research conference in Integrative Medicine will showcase original scientific complementary, alternative and integrative medical research.

The third grant to launch our unique focus was $60,000 to the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, a Washington D.C. non-profit educational organization dedicated to reviving the human spirit and transforming medicine.  The principal purpose of this grant was to support the Minnesota Wounded Warriors project, designed to train 100 key professional personnel—active duty military clinicians, administrators and chaplains, as well as local civilian clinicians who are working with returning soldiers and their families to implement an ongoing, sustainable, statewide program of service to address posttraumatic stress and major depression in returning veterans.

We view our 2008 grants as an excellent start to promote our unique focus in this important field of integrative mental health and look forward to future opportunities to support learning and expand the scope of our interest.

And, as an exciting update, we are thrilled to announce a unique partnership with the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine to support a national conference on Integrative Mental Health that will take place March 22-24th, 2010 in Phoenix, AZ.  In March, 2009, the foundation approved a grant of $240,000 to  support this ‘first of its kind event’ designed to stimulate the development of this emerging field and provide a forum for mental health care providers as well as funders to gather, learn and shape the way mental health care is provided in the future.    We are honored to be working with Dr. Andy Weil and Dr. Victoria Maizes to create this event that we believe it will prove pivotal for the field.
