The
Minneapolis Jewish Federation builds community, cares for the welfare
of Jews everywhere, and maximizes participation in Jewish life.
By supporting a comprehensive network of social services, schools, and other Jewish agencies locally, nationally, in Israel and in 59 countries throughout the world, the Federation brings hope, comfort, education, and dignity to millions of Jews and non-Jews alike. The Federation supports 30 partner agencies and programs in the Minneapolis area which nurture and educate Jewish children, maintain and strengthen family life, bring comfort and care to the elderly, preserve our heritage, combat hatred and anti-Semitism, promote inclusion, and reinforce and sustain our connection to Israel and the worldwide Jewish community. Throughout the Former Soviet Union, in Argentina, and in other nations, the Federation funds the provision of basic social services and health care to impoverished Jews as well as programs that enhance Jewish literacy and identity for children and adults. In Israel, Federation dollars provide a variety of services and programs for the elderly, at-risk youth, people with disabilities, and immigrant groups (such as Ethiopian-Israelis) who are struggling to adjust to a new society. Federation support also promotes religious pluralism in Israel and enhances connections between our local community and the Jewish state. The Federation raises the bulk of its dollars through its Annual Campaign which in recent years has generated between $14 and $15 million from close to 6500 individual gifts. Through a network of volunteer committees, these dollars are distributed locally, nationally, and overseas to meet the most pressing needs and priorities. The Jewish Community Foundation – the planned giving and endowment department of the Federation – provides another way for individuals and families to achieve their personal philanthropic goals. With assets of over $140 million, including five supporting foundations, Foundation distributions also support many activities and programs in the Jewish and general communities. In 2004, the Federation completed a Community Capital Campaign that raised $45.6 million to expand and enhance community facilities. Additionally, on an ongoing basis, the Federation offers opportunities for donors to make supplemental gifts to support programs or projects, locally or overseas, that are personally meaningful to them. In addition to raising and distributing funds, the Federation engages in ongoing research and planning to identify and determine the best way to meet current and future needs. In 2004, the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, together with the St. Paul United Jewish Fund & Council, conducted a comprehensive study of the Twin Cities Jewish community. This study provided critical information about our community’s characteristics, interests, and needs that will be of value for years to come. The full study report, as well as a wealth of other information about the Federation and its partner agencies, is available online at www.jewishminnesota.org. Whether through philanthropy, volunteerism, or a shared commitment
to making a difference, the Federation is a place where people come
together to build community and repair the world. |
